T: Thank you for your answers. Now I am going to describe a country. You are to guess it. This country is a member of the Commonwealth. It has mountains, high plains and low plains. It has several climatic regions. The people living in that country are fond of baseball, football, volley-ball, ice-hockey, tennis and other games. (Canada)

T: Let’s make up a short story about Canada. But all sentences are separated. You are to read them in the right logical order. (Учащимся раздаются карточки на каждой из которых написано одно-два предложения. Учащиеся читают предложения друг за другом. Режим Р1 Р2 Р3…Рn).

Canada has an area of nearly 10 million square kilometres.

There are many islands in the north of Canada.

Canada also has large rivers: the Mackenzie, the Yukon, and the St. Lawrence River.

The central plains form the prairies.

The population of Canada is over 24 mln people.

Canada is rich in metal ores, oil and gas.

The metal, machine-building, motor-car and ship-building industries are highly developed.

Canada’s main agricultural products are wheat, meat, some kinds of fruit and dairy products.

Canada’s largest ports are Vancouver, Montreal and Halifax.

Formally the head of the state is the King or Queen of England, represented by the Governor-General.

The Federal Parliament consists of the Senate and the House of Commons.

In all the provinces there is a legislative assembly elected by the people for 5 years.

T: Unlike other English-speaking countries Canada has two official languages. What is the French-speaking province of Canada? P1, will you tell us a few words about the province of Quebec.

P1 : Canada’s beginnings were French; and even now French is the language spoken by about one fifth of Canadians.Canada has two official languages – English and French. The St. Lawrence Valley was the heart of the French colony in North America up to the middle of the 18th century.

The St. Lawrence River, from Montreal to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, may still be called a French river.

Quebec is the home of the French Canadian nation, and Quebec City is the capital of the province. Quebec is Canada’s largest province. More than a quarter of all the population of Canada lives in this province. Montreal, the main St. Lawrence port, is the second largest French city in the world – after Paris.

French Canada still keeps some of its old traditions, but it is a mistake to say that Quebec is very different from the rest of Canada; every year the difference becomes less.

T: After the discovery of Canada many kings and navigators began to dream of the riches in this new country. But as for Australia, it was first used as a colony for convicts. They worked hard to make this country better.

T: From that time life has greatly changed in Australia. But nevertheless the living conditions in some parts of the country are still very difficult. Let’s read the text about Western Australia, the driest part of the country.( Учащимся раздаются листы с напечатанными текстом “Western Australia” и заданиями к нему из книги Ваниной Т. П. и др. “Тесты по английскому языку”).

1) Чтение текста по цепочке (Р1 Р2 Р3…Рn).

2) Выполнение заданий после текста (устно).

Western Australia is 8 times the size of Britain, but it has only one million people. 900 thousand of them live in and around the state capital, Perth. The other 100 thousand people live in “the outback”, an area of 2 mln 500 thousand square kilometres. The area is hot and dry. Temperatures are usually over 30° C in summer, and sometimes over 40° C. It hardly ever rains. Sheep farming is the main occupation, and the farms are called “sheep stations” in Australia.

Life on a sheep station is very different from life in a town. Houses are sometimes hundreds of kilometres from towns. Some people never go to towns, and never see shops. The sheep stations are very big, and children often ride motorbikes and drive cars.

The children can’t go to school, and they hardly ever see a teacher. They have lessons from a two-way radio. It’s called “The school of the air.” The students can speak to the teacher and other children in the class by radio. They get work by post. The post doesn’t come very often, about once a week. Letter – boxes are on the roads, sometimes 5 or 6 kilometres from the houses.

There aren’t any schools or shops in the outback, but what about doctors? People can talk to doctors by radio, and in an emergency a doctor comes to them by plane. They are called the “Flying Doctors”.

I. Заполните таблицу:

Facts about Western Australia.1.Area _____________

2. Summer temperature ________________

3. Population of state__________________

4. Capital____________ 5. Population of capital area__________

6. Population of outback_____________

Flying Doctors”

A different kind of life.

III. Заполните пропуски, используя следующие слова: usually, often, sometimes, hardly, ever/never.

Children__________ drive cars on the sheep stations.

Children__________ drive cars in the towns.

People___________ see a doctor.

Some people ________ go to towns.

The summer temperature is_______ over 30° C.

9. T: You know, of course, that Australia is an island continent, which was separated from the mainland long ago. And that’s why there are a lot of interesting animals in Australia. Have a look at the grid. The names of some Australian animals are hidden here. You should find them. You may search for the words in different directions. You can find the names of six animals here.

Учащиеся находят название животного, обводят его маркером. Учитель показывает картину с изображением этого животного. Затем названия животных читаются хором. Режим T-CL.

10. T: Which animal of all these do you think is liked by everybody in Australia and in the world? (The koala)

P3,will you tell us a few words about this interesting animal?

The Koala

The koala is one of the best known and most loved animals in Australia. Koala lives in lightly wooded areas containing suitable food. They are very fussy eaters, feeding almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves. Koalas seldom drink, as they obtain enough water from the diet of leaves.

The koala sleeps in a fork of a tree for most of the day and moves about and feeds at night. It is most active just after sunset.

The koala is often incorrectly called a “ Koala Bear”. It is not related to the bear family at all.

A koala’s average life span in the wild is about 12 years.

11. T: You see there are many native animals in Australia. As far as New Zealand is concerned, it has few native animals. Among them is the kiwi, which is the symbol of New Zealand. Listen to the text about this bird and then you will answer my questions.

1)Фонетическая отработка новой лексики в режиме Т-CL.

a tail – хвост

a bill – клюв

wings – крылья

nostrils – ноздри

worms - черви

to hatch out - высиживать

2)Аудирование текста (магнитофонная запись прослушивается 2 раза).

A living national emblem

Sometimes you can see a living national emblem. One of such “emblems” is the kiwi, a very unusual bird found only in some parts of New Zealand. In has no tail, almost no wings, and its nostrils are situated near the end of its bill which is used to find food.

The kiwi lives in thick forests and prefers to spend its time in the dark.

Although the kiwi weighs only a little over two kilograms, it has a very good appetite. It can eat as many as three hundred worms a day, which are its main food.

The female kiwi lays only one egg, but it is a very large egg – it is about one fifth of her own weight. After laying it, she loses all interest and leaves her husband to hatch the egg out. This takes seventy-five days and by the time the chick is hatched father kiwi has usually lost one – third of his normal weight.

In some English – speaking countries New Zealanders are known as Kiwis, because the bird is also the symbol of the people of New Zealand.

3) Answer the following questions on the text (T-P1 P2 P3…)

What is the appearance of the kiwi?

What is its bill used for?

Where does the kiwi live?

Does the kiwi weigh two or three kilos?

How many eggs does the female kiwi lay?

What does her husband do after that?

How long does the kiwi hatch the egg out?

What is the second name of New Zealanders?

T: So you can see Australians and New Zealanders like animals very much. That’s why they chose their native animals, the kangaroo, the emu and the kiwi to be their countries’ national emblems.

12. T: Now I’d like you to play a team game. It’s called “The opinion exchange”. There will be two teams. You are to exchange opinions about New Zealand with the members of the other team. They are to agree or disagree with your statements. If the answer is right, I’ll give this team a point (режим Р1-Р2, Р3-Р4).

For example:

P1: I think New Zealanders are fond of hiking.

P2: Quite so. New Zealanders are keen on hiking.

P3: To my mind more than a million of Maoris live in New Zealand.

P4: Nothing of the kind…

13. T: Thank you. I see that you know a lot about New Zealand. But don’t forget about Canada and Australia. It goes without saying that every country has its own capital. Can you name the capitals of Canada, Australia and New Zealand?

T: Now I am going to describe each city and your task is to guess it.

(Учащиеся работают самостоятельно, записывая ответы в тетради).

Text № 1 The 1st name of this city was Port Nicholson. Then it was named Britannia. Now it has the population of about 350 thousand people. (Wellington)

Text № 2 There are no crowds of people in this city. The capital territory is 21 square kilometres, but one hundred hectares are parks. The population is not even 300 thousand people. (Canberra)

Text № 3 This capital’s growth has depended almost exclusively on its political strength. Parliament Hill houses the 3 Parliament buildings: the Library of Parliament, the Centre Block and Peace Tower. In this city there is the National Museum, which has collections representing Indian and Eskimo culture. (Ottawa)

Контроль выполнения задания проводится устно.

14. T: And now I’d like you to do one more task concerning these three countries. You are to fill in the gaps (работа выполняется на карточках).

Задание и ключи:

1. ___________is a country of lakes. (Canada)

2. ___________ became the first important industry in Canada. (Fishing)

3. The people who live on Baffin land are mostly Canadian _______. (Eskimos)

4. There are two hot _________ in the central and western parts of Australia. (Deserts)

5. There are _______ big cities in Australia. (Five)

6. ________ is Canada’s national sport. (Ice-hockey)

7. Australia’s greatest rivers are_________ and________. (The Murray, the Darling)

8. Australia is famous for its___________. (Sheep)

9. The aborigines of New Zealand are___________. (The Maori people)

10. New Zealanders like___________ very much. (Hiking)

15. T: Unfortunately the time of our lesson is over. What new information have you learned today?

P1: I have learned that…

P2: …

T: You see that people in these countries are a little different from each other. Perhaps it’s because of the geographical position of the country and the mode of life of its people. But all countries are beautiful. I hope you agree with me.

16. Подведение итогов урока.

17. Запись домашнего задания.

18. Конец урока.
