Prominent people of America».

WE THE PEOPLE.
The United States has often been called “a nation of immigrants». There are two good reasons for this.
First, the country was settled, built, and developed by generations of immigrants and their children. Secondly, even today America continues to take in more immigrants than any other country of the world. It is not surprising , therefore, that the United States is counted among the most heterogeneous societies in the world. Many different cultural traditions, ethnic groups, racial and religious groups make up “we the people”
But it‘s incorrect to think that America is simply a collection of different immigrants. It is not true (as is often stated)that there are more Irish, more Germans, and more Puerto Ricans living in New York City then there are in Dublin },Frankfurt, },or San Juan Most New Yorkers don’t think about themselves primary as Jews, Negroes, Italians and Russian. Rather ,among the Americans in New York, there are many who ( or whose ancestors) originally came from Africa, Germany, Spain and so on.
In fact, 94 percent of all Americans today were born in the United States (as compared, for example, with only 85 percent in 1910. As the result, those 10 millions of Americans proudly acknowledge their ethnic roots are “more American” than German, Italian, African. What they have in common is more significant than what makes them, as Americans, different from one another.
The United States is one of the few countries in the world that has no “official” national language, or languages. English is the common language by use, but it is not the national language by law. About 30 millions of Americans speak the language other than English at home. This means, for a example, that if you meet an American in New Mexico who speaks Spanish as his first language, he could be an immigrant, having arrived in the U.S a few years ago, or his grandparents could have arrived in the United States a hundred years ago.
The United States has often been compared with “Melting Pot», the “Salad Bowl». Perhaps a better metaphor for American society would be a “pizza”, which has become the most popular food in America. The different ingredients are easy to be seen and understood and they give the whole its special taste, and yet they all are fused together into something larger.
