Oliver Cromwell

Oliver Cromwell ‘s activity in Parliament was mostly directed against the oppression of people. He organized the Parliamentary army. During the short period of protectorate he ruled the country.

The summer of 1666 was very hot and dry in London. One Sunday in September a great fire broke out in the city. Thirteen thousand houses were destroyed. But the fire did great good, it burnt dirty narrow streets. Wide streets and brick houses appeared in London after The Great Fire of London.

The state opening

This tradition marks the beginning of the new parliament year. The Queen travels from the Buckingham Palace to the Houses of Parliament in a gold carriage. During the opening the Queen sits on a throne in the House of Lords and reads the “Queen’s Speech”.
