Lesson 1. “The Lake House”
Цель урока: формирование лексических навыков.
Задачи: Обучающая: активизировать употребление изучаемого словаря; закреплять навыки понимания аутентичного материала на слух с опорой на видеоматериал. Развивающая: обучать правильно воспроизводить английскую речь в заданных ситуациях; стимулировать интерес к изучению иностранного языка; расширять кругозор учащихся. Воспитательная: заострить внимание учащихся на проблеме сложности внутреннего мира молодых людей и их взаимоотношений.
Оборудование урока: DVD player, диск с записью кинофильма « Дом у озера», карточки с заданиями.
1.Организация учащихся на работу. Сообщение цели урока.
Hello. Pleased to see you. How is it going on? Today we are devoted to the discussion of the parts of the film. You’ve been given out the cards where a film is described. Read the short plot of it and invent your own name for the film.
Sweet romantic drama with a fantasy twist about a lonely doctor who begins a long correspondence with the new resident of the lakeside house where she used to live. As the two start to fall for each other through their letters, they realize that they are somehow living two years apart.
P. It is the film called “The Lake House”.
T. Right. As you remember the film “ The Lake House” is about love and time. You have already watched the whole film in Russian language. Do you like the film? What is your impression of it? We are going to discuss the film and make some conclusions.
T. So far that we need to revise the vocabulary and the plot of it. What are the names of the main characters?
P1. The main characters are Kate Forster, a doctor from Chicago and Alex Wyler, an architector.
T. In order to recall the events of the film we are to revise the vocabulary.

T. Which words do you think are suitable for the film discussion?
T. Now, let’s be more specific. You are going to recollect in your mind the events at the beginning of the film. You’ve been distributed the sheets with the summary of the first part of the film where some of the words have been removed. While reading, please, fill in the gaps with the words from the film. …Now read your version. Work in groups.
The movie centers around lonely Dr. Kate Forster who, on a winter morning in 2006, leaves the beautiful lake house where she has been living for a job in a Chicago hospital. On her way to Chicago, she leaves a note for the lake house's new ……. asking him to kindly forward her mail and telling him about the ……….by the front door and the box in the attic.
However, Alex Wyler, the new…………., sees a different lake house, one which was neglected, dirty, and there were certainly no………….. He disregards Kate's letter until a few days later; he is painting the walkway to the house and a ………dog runs across the fresh paint leaving ……….. where Kate said they would be. He writes back to Kate, only to discover that they are ……….. in time by two years, with Alex living in 2004 and Kate living in 2006.
As Kate and Alex continue to ……….. through the………, they find themselves falling in love. Because Kate is in the future, she can tell Alex where to look for her in 2004 in places she has been. On one occasion, she asks Alex to bring her back something important (a gift from her father; her favorite novel), by Jane Austen called …………..which she left two years ago during a train station meeting with her boyfriend. Alex goes to the station and finds the book and sees Kate with long hair. Even though he has the item, he does not place it in the mailbox to return it to her. Instead, he says that he will return it to her personally, "one way or the other."
By the same dog that put …………on the walkway, Alex and his girlfriend Mona, whom he is uninterested in, meet Kate's boyfriend Morgan and are both invited to attend her birthday party.
T. Well done! It was a complicated task and you have done it very well.

T. I will give you the sheets of papers with Chronological order of events. But they are all mixed up. You are to watch the film again and put all the events in order. Consult the dictionary with the unknown words because we are going to work on them during the next lesson.

T. At home you were to watch the film and put chronological events in order. Have you consulted the dictionary? How many new words have you found out? Was it difficult for you? Let’s check it out. Now will you guess which word is meant by its definition?

Alex parks his pickup truck, and walks up to the edge of the parking lot in front of the lake house. Alex has just bought the lake house.
Alex's girl friend Mona talks to Alex at his construction site. She has just learned that Alex has bought the lake house.
Alex finds the first note, telling him about the pawprints on the bridge.
Alex paints the bridge. Jack appears and creates paint pawprints. Alex and Kate correspond.
Jack runs away. Alex abandons the lake house and gives the key to Morgan, so Kate can rent it.
Jack is found by Kate's boyfriend whom assumingly gives Jack to Kate. Kate moves in.
Kate leaves the lake house with Jack and moves to Chicago, and she also leaves the first note mentioning pawprints and a box in the attic.
On Valentine's Day, Kate witnesses a man dying in a traffic accident at Daley Plaza. Although she is a doctor and is on the scene within seconds, the man dies "in (her) arms," she later tells her lead doctor. Much later in the film we discover that it was Alex Wyler that died that day.
It appears obvious that on February 14, 2006, immediately before the accident, Kate and Alex are both alive at the same time in Daley Plaza.
On Valentine's Day, Alex receives Kate's desperate message from 2008 and begins his two year wait.
While visiting the lake house on a weekend, she finds a response letter.
Alex and Kate correspond.
Kate waits at the Il Mare, but Alex does not appear.
Kate tells Alex not to write to her anymore.
Alex is alive and well at Midnight on December 31, 2005. He is present at a New Years Eve party, as the new year [e.g. 2006] arrives.
Alex and his brother Henry meet early in the day on February 14, 2006 . When Henry reminds Alex it is Valentines Day, 2006, Alex gets into his pickup truck and races to the lake house. He gets on the ladder to the attic and searches for a specific letter from Kate that is stored there.
Just before the end of the film, there is a replay of some of the events that occured at Daley Plaza on February 14,2006, in the beginning of the film. During this replay of events that occured previously, Alex is warned by Kate [who appears in the same positions she was in previously on February 14, 2006] NOT to cross the street, thus Alex is not hit by a bus in the replay.
Kate rekindles her relationship with Morgan.
On Valentines Day, Kate and Morgan visit an architecture firm co-owned by Alex's brother, Henry. When Kate notices a sketch of the lake house, she asks Henry who made the sketch. He tells Kate that Alex did; she asks to speak to him, and Henry pauses and says sadly that Alex died two years ago on Valentine's Day. Kate asks where it happened. Henry reveals that Alex was killed by a bus at a plaza. Kate realises that Alex was the man who she had attempted to save, although she didn't know who he was.
Kate rushes to the Lake House and its mailbox. She leaves a desperate message in the mailbox, telling Alex not to come to meet her at the plaza, not to cross the street and just wait. She waits at the lake house.
Weeping, Kate almost fails to notice the telltale turning-down of the mailbox flag. She stands, turns around, and Alex appears in his pickup truck. She says "You waited", the two kiss and the movie ends.

T. Great! Now there are some pictures from the film on the board.Match the sentences in your cards and the pictures from the film. Be more specific! Tell us what the certain picture describes or relates to. Use the vocabulary from the sentences in your sheets. Some of the pupils will be given short dialogues to read and act them out for the rest of the class so that we can say what the dialogues mean.
Use the phrases:
The first picture relates to the episode……… when Alex and Katie met at her birthday party.
The second and the seventh pictures describe how… Alex and Kate correspond.
The third picture shows the last sceen of the film when they met in 2008.
The fifth picture proves us that Kate is a lonely person.

Alex: April 14th, 2004.
Kate: No. It's April 14th, 2006.
Alex: It's the same day two years apart.
Kate: Can this be happening?

T. Do you like the atmosphere of the film? Is it sentimental?
Are Alex and Kate soul mates? Do you think there is chemistry between them? What is so unusual in the film line? Who is conflicted about this film? Can you criticize the plot?
3.Подведение итогов урока.
T. I see you liked the general idea of the movie. The best romances have always been based on the idea that there is no greater love than that which is denied. The lovers most overcome if they are to live happily ever after.
4. Домашнее задание.
T. So your home task is the following: to write a small composition about the idea of the film. Here are some suggested topics for essays. The choice is all yours. An excellent composition is to make an extensive use of the vocabulary of the past two lessons. If somebody doesn’t like the plot so you can express it in your essay.

T. Today we’ll be discussing the brand new film The Lake House starring Keanu Reeves and America’s Sweetheart Sandra Bullock. What is this film about?
P. — a film about a woman and a man who exist in different time periods (he, in 2004 and her, in 2006) and how the two of them communicate through a magical mailbox.
T. You are going to speak out about your impressions of the film and be ready to give your reasons if you like or dislike it. Imagine that you are critics today.

How did Alex and Kate correspond with each other? ( through the time traveling mail box)
How did they arrange to meet? Did it work out? Why? (They arranged meeting at the restaurant but it didn’t work out for them).
What kind of desperate message did Kate send to Alex? How did she warn him in this msg? ( she asked to wait for her for two years and also not to cross the street )
In which scene do you think the chemistry between the couple was so great? ( at a birthday party or the ending of the film)
What is so supernatural in the film? Which thing did the characters have the same? ( time traveling mailbox, the same dog and its paw prints , the same house made of glass )

T. Read the two texts and tell whose opinion is close to yours. The first text is the opinion of one Russian girl and the other one is the opinion of the famous American critic Wesley Lovell
1.“ I watched the film a week ago. I have been proved there are no any boundaries for real love. It takes chances. It is good that Kate could give a chance to Alex by thanks to which we watched the last scene of the film. I watched the film with sinking. I couldn’t keep my tears at the end of it. It impressed me a lot. The Lake House reminded me about the following: human fate is somehow limited. Sometimes there is a choice that can really change something. But it is important to make a choice at the right moment when something can be changed. This film made me think a lot about the importance of waiting.
When a person is lonely but meets somebody else whom he doesn’t really love he is happy anyway because he wants to get away from his loneliness. But in a while he meets another person whom he really loves but at that very moment he can’t change anything. So may be it is worth waiting, isn’t it? But in this case we should trust our own heart. It will tell. If you see sincerity and tenderness in the person’s eyes you will understand that he really loves you.”
2.“I am conflicted about this film. I like the fact that it takes chances. I appreciate that it's trying to do a supernatural love story without falling into the schmaltz( сентиментальная болтовня) of Ghost. Yet I recognize that the screenplay is like Swiss cheese - riddled with holes, some of which are bigger and more distracting than others. I also never understood why Alex, since he is two years "behind" Kate, couldn't just look her up in the phone book. Sure, she might think he was mad, but at least he could contact her in the flesh, and woo (добиваться) her like a normal person. Of course, the film tries not to call much attention to such logic, because if you thought about it too much, the film's ending becomes quite obvious. Despite the conventional ending, the movie is designed for those who are more adventurous when it comes to romance. It will be interesting to see if it finds an audience.” Wesley Lovell

T. What is the main idea of the first review? How can you prove that the girl really likes the plot of the film? Give examples from the text. Do you agree with the girl? How do you understand the statement? True love can conquer even time and death.What is the critic’s opinion of the film? What does he mean by holes?
T. Do you agree or disagree with each statement. Match them wirh the texts you have read. Prove your point of view using the texts. The statements are given to you.
The author of the first opinion didn't expect much when he watched this and so was pleasantly surprised and quite moved.
Anyone who has yearned to go back and live again some moment in time when they lost an opportunity for a real connection with a person they loved but couldn't say the words to will understand this movie.
It is just too bad it could not better integrate its sci-fi elements and fix its plot holes.

There is no too much speaking. But it is shown how deep and strong their love is. Watch it and make up their inner monologue where their feelings could be expressed by words.

T. It has been said that the best movies are the ones that provoke more questions than they provide answers to. Then there is a movie like 'The Lake House,' which introduces so many theoretical what-ifs. Today we are going to answer some questions and express our points of view.
It’s amazing how often we miss our chances. It’s tragic how often we don’t see what’s in front of us. It’s unfortunate that we don’t get to see what might have been if we had altered our perceptions just a tiny little bit when making drastic life decisions. We ask questions to ourselves. Would my life be different now if I….? Did I purposely…? Should I ? If I had the nerve to ask that girl out a few weeks ago, would I have watched this movie with her today instead of seeing it by myself? We’ll never know and most likely We’ll never have opportunity to find out.

T. At home you were to continue the statement: If future letters were sent to me I would…Give your variants.
( e.g. I would publish a book with the “future persons” letters. It would be a bestseller. After many PR gigs on the ‘Today’ shows and the like, the movie would be made. Kanua Reeves and Sandra Bullock would star in it, of course)
3. Работа по обсуждению кинофильма.
T. Some might argue that a great love story can’t work if the two leads don’t have instant chemistry. That might be true, but since the characters in The Lake House live two years apart from one another, the chemistry they do have feels unconventional and unusual. It’s there, but maybe it’s something deeper than chemistry. Maybe, unlike most love stories, it’s not about how great these two characters would be together (if they could only get together), but about how much greater their lives would become once they found each other. How often have you heard people say they backed out on a relationship because they didn’t feel they had instant chemistry with the other person? What if they had just spent a little more time with that person? I guess they’ll never know. What do you think? Should be a real chemistry between two people to overcome life troubles?
What do they see in each other in the first place that makes them believe they have found the one they want to spend the rest of their life with?

T. You will see a statement and have to speak out. Give your reasons and explanations. You can work in pairs. On hearing a statement each of you should say something. Follow the scheme of typical responses (exсlamation, question, statement, request, suggestion, etc.).

1.There is a tiny scene in which Kate plays chess with Jack (her dog). Whether we would like to admit it or not, we have all been lonely at some time or other. Have you ever been lonely? How do you feel?
2.Long distance relationships are growing in popularity and durability, most of them spawning through online dating services. What do you think about it?
3. Love conquers all
4. If you choose to see The Lake House, you have to accept it as a fairy tale, time travel paradoxes and all. Don't think too hard - you'll spoil the mood.
